You need the right people

There are 3 things you need to get it right in the plumbing business, and the number 1 thing is the right people.

Now when I say the right people I’m not just talking about your men. I’m talking about your customers. 

The right customer is someone who

  1. Owns the plumbing (or cares about the problem that needs fixing.)
  2. Directly benefits from your service (someone who NEEDS your service and will pay for it.)
  3. Values their time (and just needs their day back.)

This right person that you need will in turn

  1. Pay you what you’re worth (because they appreciate the service.)
  2. Be a loyal customer (because you gave them their day back.)
  3. Recommend you to other people (which will help your business grow.)

So don’t worry about saying no to anyone who doesn’t fit these standards. Just know that when you choose your customers right, you’re not missing out on opportunities, you’re instead saving your time and energy for the right people. And these right people will help scale your business, with minimal losses.

You need the right processes

The second thing you need is to set clear guidelines for how your plumbing business operates. So what you need to do is ask yourself, “if I’m not here, will my staff know how to do this?” If the answer is no, then you need better processes. And that happens by setting simple processes in place. 

Yes, it can get tempting at times to follow your complexity creep–but I’m here to tell you NOT to do that. Just keep things simple. Bookkeeping, inventory, accounting, all of that–keep it simple! 

You NEED to be able to delegate, so you can live your life and have the freedom you deserve, while your people keep your business running smoothly. Because, as the owner of your business, you:

  1. Are juggling a million things all at once
  2. Need the time and space to rest so you can bounce back and operate at 100%
  3. Have a life to live and enjoy

So keep it simple, and live that freedom lifestyle you deserve.

You need the right purpose

And the 3rd and most important thing you need to know is having the right purpose–because your purpose CAN’T be your love of plumbing.

You heard me say it ain’t about plumbing, and I will keep saying it–because it’s true! You need to find your “why”, and you need it to be strong enough to help you get back up on your feet when life brings you down. And, trust me, life will try to bring you down. So you better find the “why” that motivates you to want to stand back up and be even stronger than ever.

So, again, ask yourself, are you starting a plumbing business because you enjoy being a plumber? Or, do you want to live a better life? To provide for your family and loved ones? To travel, explore, and live your wildest dreams, that you DESERVE?
