3 Golden Nuggets

  1. Keep Moving Forward; Retirement is a mindset. You either have to get busy living or you’ll be busy dying. This is the only life you’ve got, so make the most of it for as long as you have.
  2. Leaders are Readers; Turn off the news! Consume books and podcasts that will push you to learn and grow. And don’t forget! Business is business; consume content that’s outside of your immediate interests or industry.
  3. Hang with Winners; You want to surround yourself with winners, not whiners. You are who you spend time with, so join groups that are full of people smarter, richer, and more successful than you.

Show Notes

How do you level up and avoid becoming stagnant? In part three  of the “Living an Intentional Life” series, we discuss three keys to personal growth.

Keep Moving Forward

(9:28) Wouldn’t it be great to succeed on your first foray into business? Or never have steps back? The truth is that everyone is going to fall at some point, but even if you fall, fall forward. Don’t let a bump in the road stop you from progressing forward.

We’ve been conditioned to work and work until we are able to retire. This mindset matters because it keeps us hurtling toward death rather than living for the now. Our mindset should be to get busy living. Mindset matters.

Retirement was designed to keep you from moving forward and to keep you in line. Change your thinking: even when you’ve grown your business, there is no retiring or “being done”, so what’s next? If you don’t keep moving forward, you’re coasting downhill. Like they say in Shawshank Redemption, “Get busy living or get busy dying.”

We’ve been conditioned to save up all of our living until the end. When we retire at 65 or 70, that’s when life can begin. This mindset is putting us on the wrong track. Why not live while we’re in the prime of our lives instead and always be moving toward another goal?

Studies have shown that those who keep working around or after retirement age actually live longer. We were created to create; to keep working and moving forward.

Leaders are Readers

(14:30) As we talk about mindset, it’s important to read and continue to fill your mind with good books on topics that will expand your understanding and challenge your thinking.

Million Dollar Plumber’s Recommendations:

The trades are a great example of why leveling up is so important. 95% of all plumbing businesses fail within their first 3 years. Just because you’re the best plumber around doesn’t guarantee that you’ll make it – unless you’re also great at business. This is where reading and learning comes in.

Stop listening to the news! It does nothing to move you forward. Instead listen to things that open your mind and show you what can be. Common people watch the news; difference makers make the news.

MDP’s Podcast/Influencer Recommendations:
  • E on Fire JLD
  • Ed Mylett
  • Grant Cardone
  • Gary V
  • Jim Rohn

Don’t forget! Business is business. Don’t pigeon-hole yourself into consuming content that’s only about your industry or your interest. Every business relies on the same basic principles to function and succeed, so learn from those who have succeeded; no matter their title.

Surround Yourself with Successful People

(28:29) Hang with winners, not whiners.

We’ve been taught by others to think about life and money and our place in the world in a certain way. This way of thinking benefits these “others” by keeping the status quo and puts money in their pocket.

We need to learn to think wealthy, like a winner. The people around us are typically “whiners” for one simple reason. It’s easier that way. They continue to bring you down because if you succeed, what’s their excuse for staying in place?

Jim Rohn has a great quote: “We are the average of the five people that we hang around.” Who are you hanging around? The type of people living for the weekend, griping on Sunday night about the week to come? Or are they positive people who are full of life and light? You have to go and look for people who are smarter, richer, even fitter than you. It’s time to get comfortable being uncomfortable to grow.

There are national and local organizations available to you that will grow your network and get you in the room with these smarter and richer people to push you out of your comfort zone and make you grow.

Conclusion

Living an intentional life has so many aspects, but continued growth is vital if we want to make the most of this one life we have. Keep moving forward, expand your mind and shut off the news, and surround yourself with winners, not whiners.
