3 Golden Nuggets

  1. Focus on the top line; stop worrying about cutting costs, instead grow your revenue
  2. Buy that truck; and we don’t mean a piece of junk. Invest in yourself and buy the brand new truck.
  3. Act like a big company now; in order to grow, you must have the systems, mindset, and resources in place to be successful.

Show Notes

Focus on the Top Line

[12:46] If your focus is cutting costs, “I can’t spend that” or “how am I going to come up with money to rebrand?”, you’re setting yourself up for failure. Focusing on cutting costs puts you into a scarcity mindset.

If you’re focusing on scarcity, like, I gotta cut all these little costs or save every little part or little pieces of scrap, that’s not growth. you’re focused on scarcity. So that’s exactly what you’re going to get.

But when you focus on the top line, your mind is open to, how do I get more sales? How do I get more calls? How do I increase my rank on Google? Your money going out still matters; don’t start blowing cash on things you don’t need, but rather invest in things that will increase your top line.

Invest in The New Truck

[22:40] There really is no excuse not to buy that new truck because it sets you up in a couple of different ways.

First of all, buying the new truck fits in with the growth mindset. By investing in something nice and with value, you also value yourself and the future of your company.

It also gives you a greater value; you look like you’re worth it. You look like you know what you’re doing, pulling up in a new truck. I know that doesn’t sound politically correct. But take it from me guys. People don’t care how good you are at plumbing. They’re judging you by how you look, period.

Finally, a  new truck is a dude magnet. Having a nice, branded truck makes you look like a great option when plumbers at other companies see you, and it can help entice them to come work for you.

Act Like a Big Company Now

[30:30] “I’m the best. I’m the biggest, I’m the baddest.” You got to have some attitude guys. And provide the best value, because this is professional plumbing. This is business.

It’s having an attitude of expectation. I expect to be here by this time next year. I expect to have X number of trucks on the road. You have to speak it into existence. By having the systems in place now, doing the branding, getting your name on Google (check out an episode on becoming Google Guaranteed here), you are acting like you’re already the big guy, and so you will become that.

Don’t wait and say “I’ll do that when…” or “I have to wait until XYZ happens to get systems in place.” Do it now.
